Xcel Built Environment Student of the Year award

Yvonne is described as having a great attitude and manages to fit a great deal into her life, other than studying extremely hard. This includes working on the NMC Mentoring Scheme, as well as raising her young son.

Yvonne described the challenges she has faced so far:

I have faced a tough few years with looking after my young son, studying for my full-time degree in Real Estate Management and also working part-time as a Retail Supervisor. The Xcel Award has provided excellent recognition for my achievements and has increased my motivation and confidence to be successful and achieve my full potential.”

Yvonne would like to become a Chartered Surveyor for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and with the support she has received so far, she says anything is possible: To become a positive role model for young mums will encourage those in similar positions to believe that you can be a high achiever and you can do anything if you put your mind to it,” Yvonne said.

“Keep motivated and stay focused. I never once gave up. Appreciate the support from those who care and always try to succeed, even if failure occurs, keep your head held high and pick yourself up. Do not stop as you never know what the future holds,” she added.

If widening participation means anything, then it should include encouraging young parents to believe that they can continue their education. ”
