XCEL STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2009
Xcel Law Student of the Year award
Tara’s personal experiences have helped shape her passion to work in family law, in particular relating to issues of child protection. Tara is working hard at university to achieve a high grade but in her spare time she works for her community too. Using her knowledge and experience, Tara is in the process of setting up a domestic violence initiative at Greenwich for students and staff who need information on counselling or legal issues.
She explains why she wants to help fight for the rights of those suffering from domestic violence:
I think a lot of people are ashamed to say I was kicked out of home or I’ve found things difficult. People find that hard to speak about and I don’t think it’s fair that the victims are the people who are ashamed, that’s not right.”
Tara had enlisted the help of local lawyers and barristers to support her campaign. In the words of her university, her achievements so far have been “nothing short of remarkable.”
In her own life, Tara has not had the easiest route into education. She has witnessed
violence and drug abuse before her studies, and was then diagnosed as dyslexic once at university.
To come from where she has, in the manner that she has, and then choose to study and succeed at something like law makes any observer react with awe.”
