Xcel Apprentice Student of the Year award

Steven Butt is a stylist with the Art Team and student of South Thames College. He started his apprenticeship at the age of 24, after deciding he really wanted a career in hairdressing. Steven moved to London to get a placement with Anita Cox (a former Hairdresser of the Year), and now works with the Art Team.

During the awards ceremony, presenter Konnie Huq ‘fessed up’ that Steven had done her hair!

Steven’s attitude to study is exemplary and he has been described “an outstanding student and an inspiration to all” by his college.

On winning his award, Steven said:

I’m really pleased, it’s great to be rewarded for working hard and I look forward to going on to the next great thing.”

Having already picked up a nomination for the prestigious Loreal Precious Garden Awards, Steven plans to work even harder in 2010: “I’ve got three competitions lined up this year, and quite a few photo shoots for magazines so I’m doing as much as possible,” Steven said.

When asked what advice he would give to up and coming hairdressers, Steven said: “Work hard and get into a good salon. Put the hours in but go the extra mile. The more you put in, the more you get out.”

Someone who shone out as showing what can be achieved with an apprenticeship.”
