Xcel Creative Arts, Media and Design Student of the Year award

Rebecca and Jonathan stood out to Xcel judges for their work with the ‘Forget Me Not’ Trust charity. They wrote, designed and produced a 68-page lifestyle magazine called ‘Vibe’(including selling paid advertising of £800 for the charity); as well as promoting and organising the launch and a subsequent dinner dance (which raised a over £1,000).

Jonathan and Rebecca’s nominating department judged their work to be the most exceptional project achieved by students of the Media and Journalism department. Jonathan and Rebecca both achieved First Class honours degree and have both been accepted onto a Masters degree course.

At the awards evening, we asked them how they felt about winning their awards:

J: It was an absolute honour. There are quite a few misconceptions about students these days so it’s nice to kind of break that barrier and achieve this today.”

R: “It was quite a shock because we didn’t even know we had been nominated. We were really pleased when we found out.”

So what is the secret of their success?

J: “For me personally, its just doing something that I enjoy. Pursue something you like and have a passion for.”

R: Having good tutors behind you who support you. It makes a really big difference to know that somebody believes in you and that you can achieve good things.”

Working for a charity can sometimes involve achieving less than expensive experts. We can see why the Forget Me Not Trust were in this case, so delighted to get a contribution of such high creativity and professionalism.”

Andre Dixon, Xcel Awards Manager.
