Xcel Student of Courage

Originally from Trinidad & Tobago, Jade has endured years of serious health problems. She missed two years of schooling but still got into university, where she has excelled and is expected to achieve a remarkable first class degree.

Extra-curricular activities for Jade have included volunteering for the Red Cross, turtle conservation, restarting the Leeds Metropolitan’s Afro-Caribbean Society, being a student champion, organising events such as a ball and Christmas party, and starting a Biomedical Sciences Society.

Jade said she felt elated to win her award: “I was near to tears when I accepted it. Winning this award at the start of my second year has been a great boost to my confidence and has renewed my drive to achieve a first class degree. Its presence on my mantle has been a constant reminder that rewards come from hard work and dedication.”

“Thanks to the organisations that support this award, student who put their heart and soul into succeeding are recognised for their achievements, I think that it is a great thing,” she added.

Jade encouraged others who might be facing challenging circumstance to never give up: “Don't let minor set backs stop you from reaching your full potential. Where there's a will there's a way. There are enough hours in the day, it is possible to study and do what makes you happy, time management is key.”

If widening participation means anything, then it should include encouraging young parents to believe that they can continue their education. ”
